Kikielomo Oluwasegun
Chicken Breeder/Retailer
Nigeria
Kikielomo Oluwasegun's first loan from Good Seed Enterprise Development (PEER Servants' microfinance partner in Nigeria) was for $75. With this she purchased 75 day old chicks and worked very hard to develop a poultry business. She maintained an excellent loan repayment rate, received three more loans, and in just over a year, her farm grew to over 2,000 chickens!
Kikielomo focuses on raising chicks from birth to three weeks. This is the high mortality period, thus very challenging for the less-skilled poultry farmer. After getting the chicks through this critical period, she sells them to other farmers for a good profit. She also sells full-grown birds to restaurants and hotels.
But what really makes Kikielomo's business so special is her use of the profits to provide education for 150 less-privileged children. In her community, many parents cannot afford to send their children to school. Even if they could, the quality of education is very poor and Christian moral values are not emphasized. Kikielomo is much more intent on giving these children a solid academic and spiritual foundation than she is in benefiting personally from her business success. So far she has built two classrooms, bought books and desks, and employed nine teachers! Her vision is not just to be transformed, but to become an agent of transformation in the lives of those in her community.
